Barrmarrany Scents
Connect well, heal well, live well.

The client.

Barrmarrany Scents is an Australian Indigenous-owned candle and fragrance company that aim to help others ‘Connect well, heal well, live well’ with the help of their relaxing home fragrance products. Barrmarrany Scents is a sub-brand of Barrmarrany.

The project brief.

Barrmarrany Scents required the creation of labels packaging for their complete product range that communicated the organisation’s story and values. It was imperative that the brand collateral was able to visually share the feelings and emotions of the founder and her family, whose personal lived experiences with trauma and recovery influenced the creation of the scents offered by the business.

The solution.

To better understand the business and its owners, research into Indigenous trauma and healing was undertaken in the forms of online research and a cultural yarn with the family. This provided insights into the circularity of trauma and recovery for the Indigenous community, and how those experiences are continuously passed on and shared through generations of family. This became the foundation for the Barrmarrany Scents design concept: Continuity and Connection.

I created bespoke illustrations to represent each of the twelve native scents and four product categories which linked the founder back to her Indigenous and cultural roots in an art style that exudes a modern, refreshing and visually appealing vibe whilst highlighting the handmade aspect of the brand.

The continuous line-art style drawings allude to the connection and continuity of shared experiences of trauma and recovery between the family, and the watercolour style shading references the founder’s coastal homelands of Gumbaynggirr in New South Wales, creating a visual story within the designed assets and brand identity.
(The complete list of fragrance illustrations can be seen at the end!)

To help elevate the brand and product labels, I curated additional branded assets that would assist in sharing the brand message to its customers across the organisation’s various communication channels. The inclusion of the brand illustrations alongside strategic use of Gumbaynggirr language across the additional collateral helped to create an overall stronger brand identity and message.

Bonus deliverable.

As a bonus deliverable and in partnership with Kenji Salvador, we created a series of motion graphic animations for the Barrmarrany socials that would introduce the scents in a fun and captivating way. We each planned and animated six fragrance animations and collated them together to create the whole series—see my favourites below!
